The Jolly Farmers, Horne

We had a good turnout on Sunday for the meet at the Jolly Farmers, Horne. It was good to see so many of you out both mounted and on foot.  The first line led us down Blue Anchor with a good mixture of decent hedges and timber all of which jumped well.   Hounds hunted away to catch Quarry at the end of the line in the bottom field.  Unfortunately, Sandy came to grief at the third hedge but after a couple of visits to hospital now seems to be making a bit more sense!!

A short hack led us along the road to put in at Hare Lane.  Hounds hunted on which led us over tiger traps and rails before crossing the road towards Dowlands Lane, where we jumped a couple a small hedges followed by more timber to finish in Chithurst Lane.

The third line was fabulous with hedges most of the way.  The first hedge jumped well which led us across the fields to several more before looping back to jump the drop hedge, hunting on through the gate and onto the next hedge after which we turned left handed to hunt through the woods jumping the rails out before finishing over a big one and then a good canter along the field to finish with Mark and Tracey who very unexpectedly treated us all to a glass of  port and lots of lovely things to eat.  I am hoping they might do this every week!!

We hacked back to Blue Anchor where hounds were laid on just inside the gate.  Camilla jumped the rails to keep hounds left whilst Sue ably led us down to the first hedge to begin hedge hopping home.   We crossed the river before jumping the telegraph poles out of the woods and left onto more hedges before heading down the hill to cross two more fields for home.  We finished inside the gate at the top of Blue Anchor.

Tea was in the Pub viewing Julian’s photos.   Hounds had a good day and hunted well.  Camilla did a grand job on Buster.   Thanks to Sue who took over from Tony when Sandy had her fall and to Bill, Tony and Adrian for putting the day together.  Also thank you for Adrian, Chris, Danny and Florence for running and last but not least our great farmers and landowners who allowed us to hunt their land.

The Kennels, Newdigate
by kind permission of Mr & Mrs W Kear

We met at the Kennels hosted by Bill and Jennie.  There was plenty of port and whisky mac not to mention sausage rolls and cake.    After a short hack up to road hounds were laid on just inside the gate off of Partridge Lane where they hunted across the field down the lane before turning left to hunt on down through the copse before looping back across the lane jumping the tiger trap into the open field.  Hounds then led us down through the woods again over timber before finishing over a nice hedge.

Hounds were held up as the Quarry set off across the field.  After a while we let hounds go to hunt across,  jumping the road crossing which led us through the woods and onto Crutchers where we took in all the hedges, bypassing the runway to finish down by the pond.  We had a short check here while the Quarry pushed on.

The third line started well with the front pack leading the way across to the rails and tiger trap, followed by a decent hedge and a tiger trap onto the bridleway.  We cut down through Peter Halls to finish with his lovely hedges.  Unfortunately, Audrey took a fall when her horse pecked on landing.  After an initial visit to the hospital where she was given the all clear, she then returned the next day feeling not so good.  We all wish her a speedy recovery.  We finished this line with the drop hedge which Jayson show jumped and just managed to stay on!

The last line home was across Cudworth Lane and through the woods to jump the timber back onto Hound House finishing down by the barn.

Thank you everyone responsible for a great day.  Tea was held back at the Kennels with thanks to Jennie and Grace.

Eastlands Farm, Handcross
by kind permission of Mr & Mrs B Slade

Sunday saw us meet at Eastland’s Farm, Plummers Plain by kind permission of Mr & Mrs Bernard Slade.  To say it was wet would have been an understatement!!

Although we had a relatively small field at the meet and even smaller field at the end – we all had a good day.  After plenty of mulled wine, sausages and all sorts of nibbles we eventually set off.  With Camilla at the helm on Buster leading the way and Tony in charge of the field we set off through the woods taking in the cross country fences along the way.  As we came out and climbed the hill,  hounds were hunting well and streamed off,  just overshooting the gateway before turning to jump the hedges home.  It was only Nigel who was wandering aimlessly before eventually jumping the last in style to join us.

We checked in front of the house before Quarry set off down the field to the little drop hedge at the bottom where we (Camilla!!)  turned to climb up and continued to get lost in the woods – although hounds knew where they were going .  We checked by  the pond and this was a little dismal, as on opening my flask I found it more than half empty – obviously a blonde moment in putting the lid on or maybe Emma got to before me – who knows!

Quarry were soon on their way again as there is a limit to how long you can hang around soaking wet and cold!  Not for us riders though – we waited.  With watches synchronized and counting down we soon set off.  Unfortunately it wasn’t long before I became even wetter and a little muddier – unfortunately both Bill and Julian were standing by to watch.  Having “hit the deck”, getting back on was a bit tricky – after a bit of running around  Bill gave me a leg up.  Everyone else managed to jump the hedge in style.

The last line was a good run down through the woods taking in more timber before turning at the brow of the hill to watch hounds hunting away.  There was only a small hedge to negotiate before finishing in front of the house again.  There was by this time a selection of loose horses – although Audrey claims to have fallen on the flat – and Giuseppe nose dived the last.

Thank you to Adrian and Mike for running in extremely wet conditions, Bill for organising the day and to Camilla for hunting hounds.  Not to mention all the loyal supporters who turned out both on horseback and on foot.   See you next week.
